Representatives of the United States 2010 Census visited our MorningSide general meeting to talk about the peak of the Census count in spring of 2010.
Dennis Caver, partnership specialist for the regional census center, said that in a lot of communities with minority populations, such as Detroit, the numbers are undercounted.
The return in the city is 64 percent, while some suburban communities have a much higher rate, he said.
“When you look at some other communities they have a 90 percent, 80 percent return rate,” Caver said. “That’s why when their roads need to get fixed, they get fixed… Based upon the data, we’re going to congressional representation and then dollars come back to your community.”
Caver stressed that information collected by the Census bureau is confidential for 72 years and is not shared with the FBI, IRS or the Secret Service.
Key dates for the 2010 Census:
Feb. – March 2010: Census questionnaires are mailed or delivered to households.
April 1, 2010: Census Day.
April- July 2010: Census takers visit households that did not return a questionnaire by mail.
Dec. 2010: By law, Census Bureau delivers population counts to President for apportionment.
March 2011: By law, Census Bureau completes delivery of redistricting data to states.
Stay tuned for a future MorningSide general meeting visit from the United States Census 2010, possibly this spring.
