Angel’s Night Patrol 2011 in MorningSide

Angel’s Night is quickly approaching and the MorningSide community is looking for volunteers to patrol the neighborhood. Help us keep the community safe!

Patrollers are needed between 7 p.m. and midnight on Oct. 29, 30 and 31.

Report to Greater Pentecostal Temple, 15932 E. Warren. We’ll assign you an area to patrol. Volunteer when you can. All help is appreciated!

Refreshment, food and beverages will be provided.

MorningSide’s Clark Preparatory Academy featured in the Detroit News

Clark Preparatory Academy is getting a kitchen and sewing room thanks to a $100,000 grant from Lowes. This makes the school, on Bremen Street at Buckingham, the only one in Detroit Public Schools District to have such a facility.

With water rates increasing year after year, it is important for you to know what you can do to save water to save money on your water bills. This free workshop will provide you with tips to save water in your home. The workshop will also explain how saving and protecting our water helps protect the Detroit River and ultimately our Great Lakes.

The WARM Training Center will deliver a FREE home weatherization workshop at Detroit SUN Project’s demonstration house and will give away FREE weatherization kits (estimated $50 value) to members of our target community. WARM personnel will demonstrate how to install weatherization materials and will also be available to answer your questions. SUN Project personnel will also discuss how to sign up for additional FREE weatherization materials from DTE (must be a DTE customer). Refreshments will be provided. Please bring a copy of your most recent DTE bill to be included in the follow up energy analysis.

During its June meeting, MorningSide residents elected its board of directors for the 2010/2011 year. Here are the election results and officer appointments.

According to the by-laws, MorningSide can have up to 11 board members. The board is in the process of filing the one open spot. An announcement on that appointment will be made at a later date.

Neighborhoods First event on May 1

Join the Detroit Vacant Property Campaign and partners Saturday, May 1, for an opportunity to listen, learn and participate in discussions about vacant property issues and the future of Detroit neighborhoods.

The event is open to all residents, neighborhood associations and other community stakeholders.

Speakers include:
Flozell Daniels Jr., president of the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation.

Al Fields, group executive for the Detroit mayor’s office.

Karla Henderson, director for Detroit Buildings and Safety Engineering.

Community Policing throughout Detroit

Tuesday’s airing of WDET’s The Craig Fahle Show featured some of our fellow Detroit neighborhood organizations, including Indian Village and Grandmont-Rosedale, as they discussed community policing in their neighborhoods.
