Project Smile Information from Detroit Neighborhood City Hall – East District

Message from Raymond Solomon, II, Manager of the City of Detroit Neighborhood City Hall – East District

Greetings All:

As you know, there have been many changes within our city’s structure. Here at the East District Neighborhood City Hall, we are
always looking for new ways to improve the area we serve. The East District Neighborhood City Hall is looking for partners for several
upcoming projects. Although Motor City Make Over has come and gone for 2010, my office has selected the Morning Side Area for a major cleanup.

The Morning Side Association is doing an amazing job with getting residents engaged in their community. East District Neighborhood City Hall is introducing Project Smile, which is designed to assist citizens in all their efforts starting with simply cleaning up areas in the neighborhood.

I am looking forward to working with all parties willing to lend their assistance with this project.

There will be a strategy meeting:
Wednesday, July 28th at
1:00 pm at the Neighborhood City Hall
Butzel Family Center
7737 Kercheval, Suite 200.
Please let me know if this time works for you.

Project Smile has over 50 volunteers ready to help, so join us and let’s put together our plan.

Dominican Literacy Center- serving adult residents in the MorningSide area and beyond

reading-books-literacy-centerDuring a recent MorningSide general membership meeting, we had a visit from Suzanne Schreibe of the Dominican Literacy Center. Schreibe shared some information about the services the center offers: help for adults that want to learn how to read, write and spell. The center also offers math and basic computer lessons as well as tutoring. The service is free. Students pay for their books.

“We just have a wonderful place where people can come  and feel like they’re really getting that one-on-one attention,” Schreibe said. “It gives them self confidence. We work with them with whatever their goals are, toward those goals.”

The center, which opened in 1989, was formerly on the campus of the old Dominican High School. The Dominican Literacy Center has moved to 11148 Harper, Detroit 48213, in the Warren-Conner Development Building.
